William Merrell was born in 1948 in Bremen, GA; but grew up in Arkansas. He finished medical school there in 1973, then moved to Southern California where he completed a residency in internal medicine.
While in California, he met and married his wife Jeanne; together they moved to Prescott, AZ in 1977. He has practised primary care in Prescott since that time.
"One of my best friends from medical school (Bill Sizemore) jettisoned his medical career and obtained an MFA in photography. He and I spent many hours camping, backpacking and studying the natural world, where my interest in black and white photography began. After moving to Prescott, I befriended Fred McBrayer at Bradshaw Photo Shop, who helped me set up my own darkroom and taught me the basics of developing and printing fine art photos."
Bill Merrell works with manual cameras in all formats, with emphasis on medium format. Negatives and prints are developed in Bill's darkroom, using Ilford multigrade papers with varieties of toners and archival materials.
